Mohan Koirala (मोहन कोइराला): The Experimental Turn in Nepali Poetry

If Bhupi Sherchan made free verse popular, Mohan Koirala made it difficult on purpose. That is a compliment.

Who was Mohan Koirala? (परिचय)

He was a modern poet who led Nepali verse away from Romanticism and towards experiment. Nepali sources call him a pioneer of the प्रयोगवादी धारा, the experimentalist stream, and he wrote prose poems as well as verse.

Life (जीवनी)

He was born on 26 November 1926 (11 Mangsir 1983 BS) in Dillibazar, Kathmandu, and died in Kathmandu on 22 February 2007. From 1999 to 2004 he was vice-chancellor of the Royal Nepal Academy.

Literary contribution (साहित्यिक योगदान)

He asked readers to work. Experimental poetry treats the poem as a structure to enter rather than a statement to receive, and his reputation for being difficult comes from exactly that.

The Madan Puraskar for Nadi Kinarka Majhi (नदी किनारका माझी) shows the literary establishment came to honour that difficulty, not just tolerate it.

The movement around him

The 1960s and 70s were full of argument about what Nepali poetry should be. The movements piece follows the organised groups. Koirala's experimentalism ran alongside them, and the Tesro Aayam poets pushed in a related direction.

His work is in copyright, so this page describes it rather than quoting it.

Where to go next

Bhupi Sherchan is the contrast: free verse made public and memorable. Bairagi Kainla carries experiment further. All the poets are on the Nepali poets page.
