Bairagi Kainla (बैरागी काइँला): Tesro Aayam and the Limbu Mundhum

Bairagi Kainla has two lives in Nepali literature. One is as a founder of the most argued-about poetry movement of the 1960s. The other, quieter one is as the editor who put the oral scripture of the Limbu people into print.

Who is Bairagi Kainla? (परिचय)

He is a poet and editor, born Til Bikram Nembang (Limbu). His pen name is also written वैरागी काइँला and, in search, बैरागी काइला. He was chancellor of the Nepal Academy from 2009 to 2013.

Life (जीवनी)

He was born on 9 August 1939 (25 Saun 1996 BS) in Pauwa, Sartap, in Panchthar district, eastern Nepal. His 87th birthday was celebrated at his home in Panchthar in August 2025.

His honours include the Sajha Puraskar for his collected poems (2031 BS), the Jagadamba Shree Puraskar (2075 BS) and the BP Sahitya Samman (2076 BS).

Major works (प्रमुख कृतिहरू)

Tesro Aayam (तेस्रो आयाम)

With Indra Bahadur Rai and Ishwor Ballav he began Tesro Aayam, "the third dimension", publishing from Darjeeling in the early 1960s. The name was a claim that poetry needed a dimension beyond the ones it already had. The movements piece places it against the other groups of the period.

Literary contribution (साहित्यिक योगदान)

Two contributions, and they pull in interesting directions. As a Tesro Aayam poet he pushed Nepali verse towards the new and difficult. As an editor of the Mundhum he did the opposite kind of work: preserving something very old that had lived by voice. Both are ways of widening what counts as Nepali literature.

He is living and his work is in copyright, so this page describes it rather than quoting it.

Where to go next

Mohan Koirala is the other great experimentalist. Yogmaya Neupane is another poet whose work lived by voice first. All the poets are on the Nepali poets page.
