Who was Banira Giri? (परिचय)
She was a poet and novelist who wrote, by one count, fourteen books, and who taught at Padma Kanya College in Kathmandu.
Life (जीवनी)
She was born in 1946 in Kurseong, Darjeeling. Sources give two dates, 11 April and 15 March. She died in Kathmandu in May 2021, on the 23rd or 24th; sources differ on the date, on her age (75 or 76) and on the cause.
She earned a PhD from Tribhuvan University in about 1985, with a thesis on the poetry of Gopal Prasad Rimal. Ekantipur describes her as the first woman to earn a doctorate in Nepali literature; another source makes a broader "first" claim that has not been confirmed.
Her honours include the Sajha Puraskar for Shabdatit Shantanu (1999) and the Suprabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu.

Literary contribution (साहित्यिक योगदान)
She is part of the line of Nepali women writers that runs from Yogmaya Neupane through Parijat. Karagar, "Prison", is a novel about a lonely woman in Kathmandu. She was also a scholar, and her doctorate on Rimal is part of the serious study of modern Nepali poetry.
Her work is in copyright, so this page describes it rather than quoting it.
Where to go next
Parijat is the natural companion, and Gopal Prasad Rimal is the poet she studied. All the poets are on the Nepali poets page.
