The Future of SEO in the AI Era

The landscape of search is shifting beneath our feet. For the past month, Google's AI Overviews have been rolling out to more users, and a growing number of search queries now show AI-generated summaries before traditional organic results.

This is not the first time search has changed. Mobile happened. Core Web Vitals happened. But this change is different because it touches the fundamental exchange between searcher and search engine — the reason people click.

What AI Overviews Actually Change

Let's be direct: if Google answers the user's question on the search results page, some users won't click through to the website hosting the better, more complete answer.

This means ranking first is no longer enough. It used to be that ranking in the top three positions captured the majority of click traffic. Now, ranking first might put your content in the AI overview — which could drive traffic, or could steal it, depending on the query and how the AI chose to summarize.

But here's what doesn't change: Google still needs content to feed those overviews. The AI is not writing from nothing. It's synthesizing from existing pages, citations and sources. If your content is comprehensive, current, and well-structured, it's actually more likely to be included in the overview.

The Three Tiers of SEO Now

I'm watching SEO split into three distinct layers:

Tier 1: Visibility in AI — Your content appears in the overview, with a citation. This means traffic to your site, plus the credibility of appearing alongside the answer.

Tier 2: Position below the overview — You still rank well, and users who want the full article click through. This is still a huge source of traffic.

Tier 3: Not visible at all — Your content doesn't appear in the overview and doesn't rank well enough to capture click traffic. This is the danger zone.

Where does your content land? That depends on whether it answers the question better than what Google already has. And that's always been what SEO is about.

What This Means for Your Strategy

Double down on:

The fundamental truth is this: SEO has never been about tricking Google. It's always been about making content so good that Google wants to show it. AI overviews just make that more obvious.
